Fabric guide: GSM, thread count and weave
Three terms you will see on every specification sheet, explained.
GSM
Grams per square metre — the weight of the fabric. Used mostly for towels and robes. Heavier is thicker and more absorbent; lighter dries faster.
Thread count
The number of threads in one square inch of woven fabric, used for sheets. Higher is not always better: yarn quality and the weave matter as much as the number.
Weave
Percale is a plain, crisp, matte weave; sateen is smoother with a soft sheen; damask weaves a pattern into the cloth; waffle creates a honeycomb texture.
